  • ""The twin photographs shown in this book are reproductions of old stereographs more commonly known as stereo views. They were taken by a special camera having two horizontally mounted lenses spaced about seven centimeters apart, which is about the same spacing as between our eyes. When the stereograph is correctly viewed through an optical viewer such that the left eye sees the picture taken by the camera's left lens and the right eye sees the picture taken by the camera's right lens, each eye will perceive a slightly different perspective. On receiving the two different images, the brain will fuse the scene into one three dimensional picture, often referred to as 3D. Depth is the third dimension, which when combined with height and breadth, seemingly brings the picture to life ... In this book, the enlarged single image located above each stereoscopic pair enables quick viewing of the scene without using the viewing device ... Most of the scenes reproduced in this book were taken by James Ricalton who, at the time, was employed by stereograph publishing firm of Underwood and Underwood. We are fortunate today to be able to view his stereographs and to experience the realism of his three dimensional images. This book is about the Russo-Japanese war, not James Ricalton"--Preface."
