An introduction to nondestructive structural evaluation of pavements

This report discusses the major principles which can be used to categorize the various nondestructive testing techniques: static deflections, steady state deflections, impact load resistance, and wave propagation. Due to their simplicity and ease of testing, static deflection devices are widely used. The impact testing technique offers an extremely rapid technique for dtermining the dynamic load response characteristics of pavement structures. The wave propagation technique offers promise of providing elastic moduli values for all of the pavement layers. New techniques such as laser devices, light emitting diodes, and photography offer a potential for rapid deflection measurements using full-scale moving loads.
