  • "These photographic postcards document myriad aspects of American life and culture in the first half of the 20th century. The bulk of the images were taken during the picture postcard boom that began in the late 1890s and continued for two decades. The popularity of these cards was an outgrowth of technological advances, particularly the development of roll film, which opened the way for the amateur snapshot fad in 1902 when Kodak made it possible for anyone to become a "card publisher" by printing "Post Card" on the back of a three and one half by five and one half inch piece of photographic paper. The explosion came in 1903 when Kodak introduced the model 3A camera, which made negatives of postcard size, and offered to print postcards from amateurs' negatives."
