On the waterfront : a screenplay

An ex-fighter is caught up in the waterfront gangs after the death of his brother.Marlon Brando's famous "I coulda been a contenda" speech is such a warhorse by now that a lot of people probably feel they've seen this picture already, even if they haven't. And many of those who have seen it may have forgotten how flat-out thrilling it is. For all its great dramatic and cinematic qualities, and its fiery social criticism, Elia Kazan's On the Waterfront is also one of the most gripping melodramas of political corruption and individual heroism ever made in the United States, a five-star gut-grabber. Shot on location around the docks of Hoboken, New Jersey, in the mid-1950s, it tells the fact-based story of a longshoreman (Brando's Terry Malloy) who is blackballed and savagely beaten for informing against the mobsters who have taken over his union and sold it out to the bosses. (Karl Malden has a more conventional stalwart-hero role, as an idealistic priest who nurtures Terry's pangs of conscience.) Lee J. Cobb, who created the role of Willy Loman in Death of Salesman under Kazan's direction on Broadway, makes a formidable foe as a greedy union leader.

  • "Former boxer Terry Malloy and his brother Charley, the crooked lawyer known to all as 'the Gent', are members of the tough, mobster-connected Longshoremen's Union, run by Johnny Friendly. Johnny and his goons rule the waterfront with an iron fist. If you want to stay alive, you do things Johnny's way and plead 'D'n D' - deaf and dumb. Terry, seen by most as a slow-witted, washed-up fighter, is happy to do any work he can get. But when he is caught up in one of Johnny's rub-outs and meets Katie, sister of the murdered man, a conscience begins to form. Together with the idealistic but tough-talking Catholic priest Father Barry, Terry and Katie attempt to take on the gangster-ridden waterfront."
  • "Budd Schulberg's Academy Award–winning screenplay, updated as a stage drama for modern audiencesFirst performed in 1988 and again on Broadway in 1995, Budd Schulberg and Stan Silverman's stage version of On the Waterfront may represent the purest incarnation of his classic story. Produced forty years after the movie swept the Academy Awards, the subtly modernized stage play was a call to arms for a new generation. With this rendition, Schulberg and Silverman hoped to reach young people who seemed detached from the dehumanizing effects of poverty and the exploitation of society's most vulnerable. Set in the 1950s and featuring original protagonists Terry Malloy and Father Pete Barry, On the Waterfront continues to stand as a masterful and uniquely American tragedy. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Budd Schulberg including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author's estate."@en

  • "Schulberg & rsquo;s acclaimed and bestselling novel, based on a classic of American cinema In 1955, Budd Schulberg adapted his Academy Award & ndash;winning screenplay into an exhilarating novel. Suspenseful and emotional, the novel presents a more complex & mdash;and perhaps bleaker & mdash;portrait of ex-boxer Terry Malloy & rsquo;s corrupt and stunted world on the docks of Hoboken. Narrated by Father Pete Barry, the novel shifts focus to the courageous priest who stands up to the Mob, as well as his own church, in order to redeem the souls of his hardscrabble and unloved constituents. On the Waterfront is a potent retelling of an iconic American story that stands apart as an unforgettable vision of crime, politics, and class in the twentieth century. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Budd Schulberg including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author & rsquo;s estate."@en
  • "On the Waterfront comprehensively examines one of the most important films of the Hollywood canon. Providing the historical context for the film, this volume emphasizes film making as a collaborative process rather than an 'auteurist' approach, although it does highlight individual contributions to the film and the political controversy generated by the cooperation of Kazan and Schulberg with the House of Un-American Activities Committee. Included are essays specially commissioned for this volume, analyzing the screenplay, Kazan as director, Schulberg as screenplay writer, the score by Leonard Bernstein, and the reception of the film in classrooms. Collectively they demonstrate how and why this film has been an enduring favorite among cineastes and movie buffs alike. A preface by Budd Schulberg, contemporary reviews, and stills round out the volume."
