The Psalms of Holy Scripture the only songs of Zion : an appeal to the churches in behalf of this ordinance of God

"McLaren presents the reader with a concise overview of the excellence of the Psalms and their inherent suitableness for praising God, under the New Testament. Writing at a time when Reformed churches, especially the Presbyterian churches, were increasingly seeking to accommodate themselves to the sensibilities of frontier revivalism, McLaren attempts to counter the slide into relativism in the worship of God. This work, originally published in 1840, was an irenic attempt to bring peace to the Presbyterian churches on this subject of psalmody. McLaren reasoned that if Presbyterians respected the Bible, and were mindful of their agreed upon subordinate standards, true and lasting peace would ensue amongst the brethren over this issue and brother would join voice with brother in proclaiming the praises of God. After all, the excellence of the Psalms of the Bible far exceeds that of any songs penned by fallible men."--From back cover.
