Washington, Conn., 1973-1977 and [n.d], to Joan Peyser

Of a social nature, sending family news, discussing her qualifications to become editor of The Musical Quarterly--"with due regard for your accomplishments as a writer dealing with music on the contemporary scene, I don't see how you could be acquainted with the enormous international musicological literature, the bulk of it in German"--, expressing his displeasure at what became of Schirmer after it was "gobbled up" by Macmillan, mentioning Carleton Sprague Smith, Nat[han] Broder, Chris[topher] Hatch, Paul Wittke ("a pleasant fellow, but totally unqualified as scholar or as writer"), [Friedrich] Blume, [Walter] Wiora, [Marc] Pincherle, [Otto] Kinkeldey, [Mario] Di Bonaventura, Dave Boyden, Andy Minor, Karl Vötterle, [Wolfgang] Rehm, etc.; and, in the letter to Murphy, [Vice President of G. Schirmer, Inc.], saying that "You, and your associates now running Schirmer, have a positive genius for alienating and insulting people who have faithfully served the House of Schirmer for decades," asking that his name as Editor Emeritus be removed from The Musical Quarterly, etc.
