Wiesbaden, 25 September 1873, to an unidentified recipient
Thanking him for sending some music, saying he has forwarded the Variations to Hartvigson in St. Petersburg, adding that his latest cantata [Deutschlands Auferstehung] was honored in Leipzig, though it was no ordinary performance, that in 1863 Blassmann offererd a chorus of 40 for the performance, which Raff declined, that later the cantata was given in Königsberg by the Verein der Liedfreunde, that two years earlier [i.e. 1871] it was also successful in Dresden, but that its wider acceptance is hindered by Müller v[on] d[er] Werra's "patriotisch-democratische" text, adding that one must have a poem that transcends momentary difficulties and has value for all time, saying he has considered Prof. Ad. Stern in Dresden for the preparation of a suitable text, asking if the recipient has any interest in a volume of pretty, short piano pieces written by Gotthold Kunkel in Frankfurt, but thoroughly revised and improved by Raff, etc.
