Concerning plans to include The Prodigal Son at a Birmingham Festival, expressing regret that it will not be performed but accepting an invitation to compose an orchestral work, asking advice on its title--Overtura di Ballo, Ouverture du Bal, Ouverture characteristique?, etc.--, suggesting as subjects for a new oratorio either Moses or David--although both stories lack "female interest," he hopes "to overcome that by careful thought"--, then saying that the new work will be called either Christ on Earth or The Light of the World, discussing the composition, engraving, and rehearsals of the oratorio, asking if he will have Trebelli or Patey, recommending Mrs. Osgood, mentioning Davison, Santley, Mrs. Sutton, Foli, Smythson, Cummings, Reeves, Sir Michael [Costa], and other persons, etc.; the letter of 8 September 1888, signed by Sullivan, is in the hand of Walter Smythe.
