"This book was developed as a companion volume to "The Wild Mammals of Missouri." But since that previously published book was somewhat restricted geographically, the current one has been expanded to include all wild, land-dwelling mammals of North America north of Mexico. Domestic mammals and mammals adapted to life in the ocean and adjacent fresh-water estuaries are excluded except for an occasional reference. The emphasis of the text is on observing the habits and behavior of mammals; only occasionally is some physiological aspect included. And to make the information available to all reading levels, relatively few technical terms are included. --From preface (p. vi)."
