The form of content : the dance drama of Kurt Jooss
This study shows how content determines form in the dance drama of Kurt Jooss (1901-1979), a German choreographer who made fundamental contributions to the art of theatrical dance. The analysis is centered on the four extant ballets of Kurt Jooss. The cultural context in which Jooss developed his ideas and created the four works is examined first. Then the ballets are analyzed in detail, following a model of "the choreographer's bourne" as developed by Dr. Patricia A. Rowe. A final assessment shows the ballets' unique contributions to the art of theatrical dance.

"In the Jooss ballets, dramatic action is communicated through pure dance movement: content shapes form. The choreography is economical, structured and expressive. Jooss successfully fused the techniques and principles of classical ballet and modern dance within the framework of dance drama. He was a founder of the contemporary German dance movement named Tanztheater. His choreographic inventions, aesthetic theories and pedagogical approach have all been major influences in the development of contemporary modern dance."@en
