  • "Rzadko jest tak zimno, nawet w południowej części kręgu polarnego. Jest przez to jakoś dziwnie. Zmysły są zarazem wyostrzone i przytłumione. Odsłonięte części ciała najpierw pieką, potem bolą, wreszcie drętwieją. Znika dotyk i węch. Jesteśmy na pustkowiu, około trzydziestu metrów na wschód od głównej drogi. Dwadzieścia metrów od nas na północ stoi stodoła dla chorych i rodzących reniferów. Aslak ma tysiące renów, całkiem nieźle z nich żyje. Jego dom, drogi, ceglany, w ranczerskim stylu, wznosi się kolejnych sto metrów na północy wschód. W dalekich oknach mrugają bożonarodzeniowe światełka. Na południe i na zachód ciągną się tylko jałowe pola i zamarznięte lasy. Panuje tu nastrój osamotnienia, a raczej opuszczenia. Miejsce wydaje się wręcz idealne na morderstwo. Wyobrażam sobie, jak zabójca skręca z głównej drogi, gwałtownie wyłącza silnik, gasi światła. Zanim całkiem się zatrzyma, ślizga się jeszcze kawałek po szosie. Niebo jest zasnute chmurami, mrocznego popołudnia nie oświetlają ani księżyc, ani gwiazdy. Najbliższe domostwa, w jedną stronę stoją w odległości futbolowego boiska, w drugą - dwóch boisk. Morderca ma spokój i czas. A jeśli usłyszy jakiś hałas albo zobaczy światła, wystarczy tylko, że uruchomi samochód i odjedzie, zanim ktokolwiek go zauważy."
