  • "The Minister of Conservation asked the Clean Environment Commission (CEC) to conduct an investigation into nutrient reduction and ammonia treatment at the City of Winnipeg's wastewater treatment facilities. More specifically, the CEC was asked to provide advice and recommendations on the appropriate and sustainable level of nitrogen reduction. The question as to whether the City should remove nitrogen from its wastewater has impacts upstream and down. It goes far beyond blue-green algae in Lake Winnipeg. The CEC continues to share the widespread view that Lake Winnipeg is in trouble and needs significant help, quickly. But, in this review of nutrients and, in particular, nitrogen, the CEC looks beyond the lake to the larger environment of the province, as well as to the global situation.--Includes text from document."
