John Cage's Theatre Pieces Notations and Performances

Introductory material on Cage's basic compositional concerns from the mid-1930s through the early 1950s place the theatre pieces in an aesthetic and historical context. The central chapters discuss the theatre pieces in groups of variations, including Water Music, Music Walk, 4' 33", Theatre Piece, Musicircus, Song Books, and europeras 1 & 2. Cage's work as a performer is also discussed. The primary topics of investigation are chance procedures in composition, notation indeterminate of its performance, structure, simultaneity, and the relationship between the score and performance.
