A good year

When he inherits his uncle's vineyard, Max Skinner turns his back on the London financial world for a taste of Provence, but the estate is in need of work and the wine produced there is swill, not to mention the caretaker who is overly anxious to acquire the land. Further complications arise when a beautiful woman arrives from California with a vast knowledge of vineyards and a legitimate claim on the estate.

  • "After losing his job and being disgusted with London, Max Skinner fortunately inherits a vineyard in Provence."
  • "A fascinating tale of the French wine trade from Peter Mayle, the enchanting chronicler of the Provencal ex-pat life."
  • "Peter Mayle once again returns to the beautiful but complicated world of Provence, to find that the highly competitive boutique wine trade has hidden depths that cannot be hidden by the sunny grape arbors above the ground. Mayle's usual fish-out-of-water British protagonist comes to inspect a Provencal vineyard left to him by his newly-dead uncle. While handling the details of the estate, he is distracted by two gorgeous women, but not distracted enough to overlook that his caretaker desperately wants the vineyard's land. When a beautiful young Californian arrives on the scene, with both a credible claim to the vineyard and a fount of viticultural knowledge, the plot begins to twist and curve into elegant complication and release."

  • "Max Skinner is not exactly setting the London financial world on fire--and when his supervisor steals his biggest client, it's definitely time to inspect the vineyard in Provence that his recently departed uncle left him. Heartily and happily distracted upon his arrival by the landscape, the weather, and the food- not to mention the gorgeous notaire handling the estate and the stunning owner of the local bistro- Max almost forgets about his inherited property."
  • "Max Skinner, man about town and successful city slicker, finds himself suddenly redundant and instead of rejoining the rat race he has an opportunity to start a new life when he finds he has inherited an 18th century vineyard in Provence. It sounds ideal but life has a habit of surprising, even in paradise. Originally published: Time Warner, 2004."@en
  • "Having lost his biggest client to an unscrupulous boss, Max Skinner journeys to Provence to inspect a vineyard he has inherited and finds additional challenges in the vineyard's inferior wine and a California woman's claim on the estate."
  • "Max Skinner is not exactly setting the London financial world on fire, and when his supervisor steals his biggest client, it's definitely time to inspect the vineyard in Provence that his recently departed uncle left him. Heartily and happily distracted upon his arrival by the landscape, the weather, and the food, not to mention the gorgeous notaire handling the estate and the stunning owner of the local bistro ... Max almost forgets about his inherited property. Which might have been a good idea, because the wine produced there is swill. But then why, Max has to wonder, is his caretaker so anxious to acquire the land? When a beautiful young woman from California arrives with what might be a legitimate claim on the estate, and knowledge of vineyards that far outstrips Max's own, the plot begins its twists and turns into and out of truly wonderful complications and resolutions."@en
  • "Mayle's breezy, uncomplicated fifth novel (Chasing Cezanne, etc.) and ninth book follows 30-something Max Skinner from a sabotaged financial career in London to his adoption of the Provençal lifestyle on an inherited vineyard in France...."
