"Questo saggio affronta un tema nuovo, solitamente trascurato dagli storici: l'abbandono dei bambini nella civiltà occidentale, dai tempi dell'antica Roma fino al secolo XVI. L'Autore sostiene infatti che non esiste nessuno studio moderno sull'abbandono come fenomeno storico riguardante il periodo in questione. Boswell offre una approfondita trattazione delle sorti di quei bambini che, indesiderati, venivano "esposti", cioè abbandonati con varie modalità e in vari luoghi e affidati così alla pubblica carità. A seconda del tempo e delle persone che li incontravano, potevano intraprendere le strade più diverse, dalla prostituta al chierico. Il testo è diviso in quattro parti, che consideriamo in successione: le modalità del fenomeno in Età antica (Roma imperiale e l'epoca dei Padri della Chiesa), nei primi secoli del Medioevo, nel Basso Medioevo, negli ultimi secoli del Medioevo. Il testo è completato da una appendice contenente i testi ritenuti più significativi dall'Autore e da un ricco corredo di note. Per ciascun periodo vengono esaminate varie fonti e testimonianze, al fine di stabilire chi e per quali motivi "esponesse" i propri figli, le modalità dell'abbandono, le prospettive di vita che si aprivano per questi "trovatelli". Quello che stupisce sono sicuramente l'entità e la diffusione del fenomeno, non solo in epoca pagana, ma anche in tempo cristiano. Sostiene l'Autore: <<Né le scritture ebraiche, portate dal Cristianesimo nella sua casa adottiva, Roma, né le scritture cristiane proibivano l'abbandono (...) nessun autore cristiano espresse mai il principio secondo il quale dare la vita ad un figlio comporta necessariamente il dovere di allevarlo (...). Nel IV sec. la teologia, la legge cristiana e i canoni conciliari testimoniano che l'abbandono era diffuso tra i cristiani almeno quanto lo era stato tra i pagani di Roma>>.
