Crimes of gender : violence against women

School Library Journal: While there is an urgent need for information about violence against women, this treatment is disappointing. Chapters are long enough to spark a heated class discussion, but too short to shed much light on the topic. With chapters titled "Mutilation of Female Genitalia, "'' Sexual Slavery in Thailand, '' and "Battered Women, '' to name a few, it's not an easy book to read. Although questions to prompt critical analysis are provided, the overall presentation seems biased. Readers are given the impression that prostitution is largely a third-world problem, and that while abuse of women in developing countries is documented, incidents involving American women are debatable.
