The Atlantic Groundfish Strategy, an analysis of the program on a regional basis
The Atlantic Groundfish Strategy was established in May 1994 to provide income support, labour market adjustment, and training options for those affected by fisheries closures in Atlantic Canada. This report is prepared in response to many requests for information about the Strategy and attempts to answer data queries most frequently received. It begins with background information on the Strategy, then provides an overview of program clients, program expenditures, and program interventions. This is followed by highlights concerning eligible program clients in Newfoundland & Labrador by census subdivision, by human resource centre, by economic zone, and as a percentage of population. The final sections cover the following subjects: the Newfoundland fishing industry 1987-96; sources of income of program clients; client participation in social assistance programs; and future program options for clients. Appendices include statistical data.
