Suzhou River

When petty criminal Mardar is assigned to mind Moudan, the daughter of a smuggler, the two youngsters soon fall in love. But, Mardar's shady associates persuade him to kidnap her and hold her to ransom; Moudan finds out and, heartbroken, she escapes and hurls herself into the murky depths of the Suzhou River. Mardar is distraught until he meets nightclub dancer MeiMei, who bears a striking resemblance to Moudan. Soon, he becomes obsessively convinced that she is in fact his lost love.
