  • "From this study we get a clear picture of the economic circumstances of the unemployed, how they define their unemployment situation, their strategies for survival, and the orientation of these strategies, social organisations and relationships, religious behaviour and orientations, and political behaviour and orientations."@en
  • "The study is based on a purposive non-random sample of one hundred and fifty-four (154) unemployed Trinidadians, and has three specific aims. Firstly to examine the way in which unemployment affects social life by presenting a descriptive picture of social life among the unemployed."@en
  • "Accordingly, we examined such indicators of social life among the unemployed as economic circumstances--level of income, food and nutrition and housing conditions; their subjective perception and interpretations of unemployment; their major means and strategies of getting monetary and non-monetary support, and the orientations of these strategies; social organisation and family life--marital status, ideal marital status, illegitimacy, and perceived impact of unemployment on relations of kinship and friendship; religious life--church memberships, church attendance, and extent of prayer; and political life--political attitudes, predisposition to class action, awareness of class boundaries, and voting behaviour."@en
  • "Thirdly, to examine the proposition that it is not unemployment per se which affects social life among the unemployed, but rather the way in which the unemployed define their (unemployment) situation. To do so we introduced definition of the situation as a test factor on the relationships between the socio-demographic variables and the respective indicators of social life."@en
  • "Secondly, to show how these aspects of social life among the unemployed varied according to selected socio-demographic (location, age, sex, race, occupational class, network-work support and definition of the situation) and labour market (duration of unemployment, work experience, and income loss) factors. Accordingly, we cross-tabulated the above indicators of social life by the specified socio-demographic and labour market factors."@en
  • "A general theme running through much of the sociological research on the unemployed is that unemployment may be a source of "breakdown," "disorganisation" and "social deviation." We focus on this and related themes in this dissertation by examining the consequences of unemployment for social life among the unemployed in Trinidad."@en
