The two emigrant ancestors of Emerson and Benson families were: Thomas Emerson, who was baptized at Bishop's Stortford, Herts., England, on July 31, 1584 and died at Ipswich, Mass., on May 1, 1666; and John Benson (Binson), who may have been born in Caversham, Oxford, England ca. 1607/08, and who died at Hull, Mass. on Jan 13, 1678. The two families merged when Charles Francis Emerson (1864-1904) married Bessie Benson (1866-1932) at Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1889. Charles was born probably at Portage, Wisconsin. He was the son of Edward O. Emerson and Lucy Harriet Johnson. He died at Sugar Lake, Pa. Elizabeth "Bessie" was the daughter of Byron Benson and Minerva Stevens. She was born in Enterprise, Pa. and died at the family's summer home on Buck Island, Lake Placid, N.Y. Family members and descendants live in Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maine and elsewhere.
