  • "This autobiographical novel portrays the childhood, school days, adolescence, and early manhood of Stephen Dedalus, later one of the leading characters in Ulysses. Stephen's growing self-awareness as an artist forces him to reject the whole narrow world in which he has been brought up, including family ties, nationalism, and the Catholic religion."@en
  • "A masterpiece of subjectivity, a fictionalized memoir, and a coming-of-age prose-poem, this novella introduces Joyce's alter ego, Stephen Daedelus, the hero of Ulysses. It describes Stephen's formative years in Dublin; as Stephen matures, so does the writing, until it sparkles with clarity. This novella is a narrative experimentation that would help change the concept of literary narrative forever."@en

  • "Consistently ranked as one of the best novels ever written, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is Irish author James Joyce's most autobiographical work. It tells the story of the intellectual and philosophical journey of Stephen Dedalus, a young Catholic man and later an artist, as he questions his upbringing in the Church and Irish society. A coming of age story told in Joyce's distinctive modernist style, the novel was hugely controversial upon its publication, but has ultimately found a place as a universally praised offering from a master of English literature."@en
  • "Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best novels of all time Published in 1916, James Joyce's semiautobiographical tale of his alter ego, Stephen Dedalus, is a coming-of-age story like no other. A bold, innovative experiment with both language and structure, the work has exerted a lasting influence on the contemporary novel. 'Joyce dissolved mechanism in literature as effectively as Einstein destroyed it in physics,' wrote Alfred Kazin. 'He showed that the material of fiction could rest upon as tense a distribution and as delicate a balance of its parts as any poem. Joyce's passion for form, in fact, is the secret of his progress as a novelist. He sought to bring the largest possible quantity of human life under the discipline of the observing mind, and the mark of his success is that he gave an epic form to what remains invisible to most novelists... Joyce means many things to different people; for me his importance has always been primarily a moral one. He was, perhaps, the last man in Europe who wrote as if art were worth a human life... By living for his art he may yet have given others a belief in art worth living for.'"@en

Joyce's novel trace the intellectual and religio-philosophical awakening of young Stephen Dedalus as he begins to question and rebel against the Catholic and Irish conventions in which he has been raise."@en

Its originality shocked contemporary readers on its publication in 1916 who found its treating of the minutiae of daily life indecorous, and its central character unappealing. Was it art or was it filth? The novel charts the intellectual, moral, and sexual development of Stephen Dedalus, from his childhood listening to his father's stories through his schooldays and adolescence to the brink of adulthood and independence, and his awakening as an artist. Growing up in a Catholic family in Dublin in the final years of the nineteenth century, Stephen's consciousness is forged by Irish history and politics, by Catholicism and culture, language and art. Stephen's story mirrors that of Joyce himself, and the novel is both startlingly realistic and brilliantly crafted. For this edition Jeri Johnson, editor of the acclaimed Ulysses 1922 text, has written an introduction and notes which together provide a comprehensive and illuminating appreciation of Joyce's artistry."

  • "James Joyce's first novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man chronicles the emotional and intellectual development of Stephen Dedalus -- a character partly based on the author himself from his early childhood and his school and university days all the way to his first forays as a young artist. Dedalus's thoughts and epiphanies reveal the tensions, insecurities and feelings of guilt that are the product of living in a country and period so deeply divided along religious and political lines. Pioneering an innovative stream-of-consciousness technique characteristic of early Modernism, and often resorting to mythical, historical and literary allusion which would find fuller expression in Ulysses, Joyce's groundbreaking work shocked the readers of its day and continues to challenge analysis and interpretation."

'I will not serve,' vows Dedalus, 'that in which I no longer believe'and I will try to express myself in some mode of life or art as freely as I can.' Likening himself to God, Dedalus notes that the artist 'remains within or behind or beyond or above his handiwork, invisible, refined out of existence, indifferent, paring his fingernails.' Joyce's rendering of the impressions of childhood broke ground in the use of language. 'He took on the almost infinite English language,' Jorge Luis Borges said once. 'He wrote in a language invented by himself...Joyce brought a new music to English.' A bold literary experiment, this classic has had a huge and lasting influence on the contemporary novel.
