Hogan rides into the town of Larribee seeking a blacksmith to replace one of his horse's shoes. He is on the trail of the man who murdered his partner Max Bollivar. The only clue he has are some bloodstained bills. In a matter of hours he learns that the town is controlled by Colonel "King" Hildebrand whose word is the law. Hogan becomes aware that Hildebrand has something to do with the bloodstained bills and decides to stay until the mystery is solved despite efforts to have him move on.
