"Little Charles" and "Albemarle" : two episodes in a family story
Charles Grice (ca.1763-1833) was a son of Francis Grice, a Welsh immi- grant to Philadelphia. Charles moved to Camden, North Carolina, where he built stores and mills and a shipyard, as well as being a consulting lawyer. He married twice. His daughter, Sarah Ann, married Gilbert Elliott, son of Peter Elliott. Gilbert died soon, but Gilbert Elliott Jr. (b.1843) also became a lawyer whose real love was ships and shipbuilding. "Little Charles" was a ship built by Charles Grice (the grandfather), lost to the French during the Napo- leonic Wars. "Albemarle" was a ship built by Gilbert Elliott Jr. (the grandson), which served the Confederate Navy during the Civil War, and was sunk in October 1864. Descendants and relatives lived in Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Louisiana, New York and elsewhere.
