Joseph Beuys died on 23 January 1986. The Municipal Gallery in the Lenbach Villa in Munich put on a large exhibition in his honour, which had originally been intended to celebrate his 65th birthday and came to be a tribute to Beuys. Some seventy artists - sculptors, painters, performance and object artists - presented exhibits on this occasion. The work of Joseph Beuys was thus not only documented through his own work but also as it is reflected in the work of his friends, colleagues and pupils.
