The last chronical of Barset

This panoramic novel is a collection of small plots, including a continuation of the story of Lily Dale and Johnny Eames (of The small house at Allington), the death of the dreadful Mrs. Proudie (of Barchester towers), and the false accusation of theft against old Mr. Crawley, who is triumphantly vindicated. Trollope obligingly killed off Mrs. Proudie at the request of his readers, who uniformly detested her. As he said in his autobiography, "I regard this as the best novel I have written."

  • "The final novel in Trollope's great "Barsetshire chronicles" is the story--with elaborate complications--of a poor curate accused of theft."@en
  • "In this, the last of the Barsetshire novels, many familiar characters appear, but the mood of the novel is darker and more uneasy than in earlier volumes. When Mr Crawley, curate of Hogglestock, is falsely accused of theft he suffers bitterly with his family."
  • "The Last Chronicle of Barset is the grand finale to the Barsetshire sereis of novels, Trollope's magnificent portrayal of the professional and landed classes of Victorian England. The plot focuses on Mr. Crawley, the fanatically proud curate of Hogglestock already known to readers of Framley Parsonage. Accused of theft and persecuted by the domineering Mrs. Proudie and her self-righteous followers, he is perhaps Trollope's only character conceived on a heroic scale, and his sufferings reach a tragic intensity. Other familiar characters on the Barsetshire landscape include Mr. Harding, whose old age is movingly described; Grace Crawley, who becomes romantically involved with Major Grantly; and Johnny Eames, who continues his pursuit of Lily Dale but becomes entangled in a dangerous flirtation with the intriguing Madalina Demolines. Lady Lufton, Mr. Robarts, the Greshams, and the Thornes also reappear to play their final part in the Barsetshire drama. - Back cover."@en

  • "Anthony Trollope was a masterful satirist with an unerring eye for the most intrinsic details of human behavior and an imaginative grasp of the preoccupations of nineteenth-century English novels. In The Last Chronicle of Barset, Mr. Crawley, curate of Hogglestock, falls deeply into debt, bringing suffering to himself and his family. To make matters worse, he is accused of theft, can't remember where he got the counterfeit check he is alleged to have stolen, and must stand trial. Trollope's powerful portrait of this complex man-gloomy, brooding, and proud, moving relentlessly from one humiliation to another-achieves tragic dimensions. --Publisher."

  • "Did the Reverend Josiah Crawley, the curate of Hogglestock, really steal a check? Poverty and misfortune have so clouded his mind, even he isn't sure. The tragic character must even worry that his accusers will ruin his daughter's prospects for marrying the Archdeacon's son. "I regard this as the best novel I have written," declared the author."
