Letter, 4 October 1816, written by Rob[er]t Y[oung] Hayne from Charleston, S.C., to Matthew Carey, Philadelphia, points out that he had been unable to collect additional subscriptions to David Ramsay's History of the United States. Published posthumously in 1816 by Carey, sales of the History were promoted by Hayne, who had promised in his eulogy of Ramsay that the proceeds from the edition would benefit the education and support of the physician and historian's eight children.
