"This program shows Versailles and its political purpose and the arbitrary applications of despotism: revocation of the Edict of Nantes, deportation of Huguenots, persecution of Jansenists, and the relationship between the king and the Church. When Louis XIV died, new political concepts were prevalent. The program covers Montesquieu, the parliament, the Encyclopédie, the ideas of Voltaire and Rousseau, and the satires of Beaumarchais. Financial difficulties beset the crown and Louis XVI convoked the 'E®tats-Généraux, which had not met since 1614."
