  • "Barnaby, a kind, half-witted young man, joins the Gordon rioters to proudly carry their banner. Along the way we get to meet Barnaby's murderous father, the hangman Dennis, and the madcap Hugh. There are vivid scenes of pillage, battles and executions as well as myriad characters who are grim, romantic and humorous. Sixteen 90-minute cassettes and two 60's."@en
  • "The "No Popery" or Gordon Riots of 1780 include orgies and fires and Lord George Gordon as a major figure."@en

  • "Dickens' Barnaby Rudge is both an intensely private examination of the relationship between father and son and a grand tale of rebellion in the public arena. Set in the boiling agitation of 1780's London with a cast of truly Dickensian characters, Barnaby Rudge is Dickens' first historical novel, outlining the events of the Gordon Riots."@en
  • "Written at a time of social unrest in Victorian Britain and set in London at the time of the anti-Catholic Gordon Riots, Dickens's brooding novel of mayhem and murder in the eighteenth century explores the relationship between repression and liberation in private and public life. Barnaby Rudge tells a story of individuals caught up in the mindless violence of the mob. Lord George Gordon's dangerous appeal to old religious prejudices is interwoven with the murder mystery surrounding the father of the simple-minded Barnaby. The discovery of the murderer and his involvement in the riots put Barnaby's life in jeopardy. Culminating in the terrifying destruction of Newgate prison by the rampaging hordes, the brilliant descriptions of the riots are among Dickens's most powerful. Barnaby Rudge looks forward to the dark complexities of Dickens's later novels, whose characters also seek refuge from a chaotic and unstable world."@en

  • "Barnaby Rudge is a young innocent simpleton who is devoted to his talkative raven, Grip. When he gets caught up in the mayhem of the Gordon riots and a mysterious unsolved murder, his life is put in jeopardy. • "Set at the time of the Gordon anti-Catholic riots of 1780, the novels atmosphere is madness, power, murder, mob violence. It is a tale, also, of thwarted love by the designs of Geoffrey Haredale and the villain Sir John Chester, and the heroism of Edward Chester in rescuing the innocent Emma. Other characters include Lord George Gordon himself, and Grip, the raven who inspired Edgar Allen Poe's poem."@en
  • "First published serially beginning in 1841, this historical novel by Dickens is set in London during the Gordon riots of 1780. Desperate to prevent the marriage of his niece, Emma, to Edward Chester, Geoffrey Haredale enters into a doomed alliance with Edward's untrustworthy father, John. Murder and blackmail result."

  • "Renowned storyteller Charles Dickens takes on the historical novel in Barnaby Rudge, a gripping fictionalized account of the anti-Catholicism turmoil that rocked England in the late eighteenth century. The novel pairs Dickens' social insights into the "anti-papist" riots of 1780 with the quirky, closely observed characters that have won him a loyal following the world over."@en
  • "Several associates receive different fates after their participation in the Gordon Riots of 1780. Dickens' final, unfinished novel centers on the disappearance of a young man."
  • "Set in London at the time of the Gordon Riots, Barnaby Rudge interweaves a murder mystery with the story of Lord George Gordon's dangerous appeal to old religious prejudices. The brilliant descriptions of the destruction of Newgate prison by the rioters contain some of Dickens's most vivid writing. This edition uses the forthcoming Clarendon text and includes all the original illustrations, plus illuminating introduction and notes. - ;'What dark history is this?'This is the question that hangs over Dickens's brooding novel of mayhem and murder in the eighteenth century. Set in London at the ti."@en
  • "Roman over de gebeurtenissen rond de anti-katholieke rellen in Engeland in 1780."
  • "For the background to this historical novel, a tale of mystery, suspense and unsolved murder, Dickens chose the anti-Catholic Gordon Riots of 1780. Mayhem reigns in the streets of London, vividly described by Dickens, and the innocent Barnaby Rudge is drawn into the thick of it. Against the public disorder, Dickens tells of the private discord within families - with fathers and sons at loggerheads - and creates a wealth of colourful characters: the sinuously evil Lord Chester; the pretty and vivacious Dolly Varden; and the host and regulars at the Maypole Inn - a symbol of security in those uncertain and violent times."
  • "The many episodes in this novel centre round the Gordon riots."
  • "Set at the time of the Gordon anti-Catholic riots of 1780, this is Dickens's powerful, atmospheric novel of madness, murder, and lurid mob violence. It is also a tale of love thwarted by the designs of Geoffrey Haredale and the villain Sir John Chester, and the heroism of Edward Chester in rescuing the innocent Emma."@en
