The United Nations and Mozambique, 1992-1995 is an account of one the most innovative and multifaceted operations ever undertaken by the United Nations. A combined effort of peace-keeping, humanitarian aid and electoral assistance, the United Nations Operation in Mozambique (ONUMOZ) was critical not just to sustaining a fragile peace but to helping the Mozambican people establish a solid foundation for a peaceful future. The key United Nations documents related to the operation which culminated with the first free and fair multi-party elections in Mozambique's history - are gathered in this volume. Complementing the documents are an introduction by Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali and a detailed chronology. The documents include: 1) resolutions of the General Assembly and of the Security Council; 2) reports of the Secretary-General; 3) the General Peace Agreement between the Government of Mozambique and the Resistência Nacional Moçambicana (RENAMO) signed in Rome on 4 October 1992.
