  • "Jane Eyre is Charlotte Bronte's most enduring masterpiece, the unforgettable tale of an orphan girl's ardent search for a wider and richer life. Originally published in 1847, it was an immediate popular success, but it also caused a storm of controversy. Bronte's firm insistence on the equality of the sexes and her prescient creation of one of literature's most independent heroines shocked many of her contemporaries. This surprisingly modern sensibility, combined with Bronte's magical use of language and her incandescent storytelling, makes the novel particularly rewarding and accessible today. Set in England's lonely moors and peopled with such memorable characters as the brooding Mr. Rochester, passionate yet melancholy, and the keeper of a terrible secret; the hypocritical Mr. Brocklehurst, a dour "black marble clergyman"; Helen Burns, Jane's beloved but doomed young friend; Bertha, the famous madwoman in the attic; and of course, its incomparable heroine, Jane Eyre has rightfully taken its place among our greatest literary works."@en

  • "Immediately recognized as a masterpiece when it was first published in 1847, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre is an extraordinary coming-of-age story featuring one of the most independent and strong-willed female protagonists in all of literature. Poor and plain, Jane Eyre begins life as a lonely orphan in the household of her hateful aunt and then is sent to the Lowood School, a situation even worse. She becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with her employer--the dark, impassioned Mr. Rochester--but an explosive secret tears apart their relationship, forcing Jane to face poverty and isolation once again. One of the world's most beloved novels, Jane Eyre is a startlingly modern blend of passion, romance, mystery, and suspense."@en

Charlotte Brontë's masterpiece has captured the imaginations of readers since its publication in 1847, and in the last century alone, the novel has spawned a plethora of film and television adaptations, guided tours of associated Yorkshire places, and even a recipe for Jane Eyre walnut tea sandwiches perfect for book club gatherings. For those unfamiliar with the classic tale of Jane Eyre and Edward Fairfax Rochester or those just interested in revisiting their story, experience the novel as it was initially published with this early edition of the first volume (and then follow up with the second and third volumes, also included in the app)."@en
