Border bandit

Six outlaws steal twenty thousand dollars in gold bars from the notorious Sabine mine, prompting quick action from the Mexican government. Captain Luis Salcedo of the Federales orders rancher Poe Harper to capture the outlaws, who have fled into American territory, and to retrieve the gold, or else Poe will lose his ranch in Mexico's Chihuahuan Desert. Poe accepts the ultimatum, even though one of the outlaws is his own brother, Chris Harper. During Poe's manhunt across the Mexican border, three of the outlaws are killed by Apaches and two by Poe himself, leaving Chris as the lone survivor. Poe returns the gold, but refuses to turn his brother over to Salcedo, thereby losing his ranch. At the novel's end, Poe decides to start another ranch in New Mexico.
