  • "Summary: Animation artist Norman McLaren has made a number of films for which the visuals were created by drawing directly onto 35mm film stock. For some of them he also drew the soundtrack and this short is intended to explain how this is accomplished. It starts by illustrating what a variety of sounds look like when interpreted visually by an oscilloscope and points out that each sound has its own distinctive pattern of light and dark. McLaren demonstrates the effect of these patterns when they are reproduced on the soundtrack of a film and then depicts how variations in tone and pitch are achieved. (Ideally this film should be followed by a screening of "Loops" or "Rythmetic", in which this technique is applied.) Awards: International Film Festival, Venice."
  • "An explanation of the processes used in the design of synthetic film sounds. The sounds are depicted on film as patterns of differing size and shape which, using photoelectric cells, are then transformed into sounds."

  • "Explains the principles and production of synthetic sound, and shows Norman McLaren's experimentation with hand-drawn sounds on film. An oscilloscope records what various sounds look like--the strings of a guitar, the tones of a tuba, the crow of a rooster, and the human speaking voice. Explains how sound vibrations are translated into an area of varying width on a film's sound track. Norman McLaren demonstrates on a moviola the sounds that emit from a soundtrack on which he has drawn dots, lines, and triangles. Shows how these sounds are synchronized with the hand-drawn animations."
