- "In 1997, Canada's Oceans Act was passed to provide a statutory framework for a national oceans management strategy based on the principles of sustainable development, integrated management and the precautionary approach. As part of this strategy, members of the Stakeholder Advisory Council for the Eastern Scotian Shelf Integrated Management (ESSIM) area developed a set of objectives under their identified goal for "Healthy Ecosystems." The species-based conservation objectives are to ensure that key species are not disturbed by human activity to the point of not being able to fulfill their role within the ecosystem.
