The way things go

Inside a warehouse, artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss build an enormous, precarious structure 100 feet long made from common household items - tea kettles, tyres, old shoes, balloons, wooden ramps, etc. Then with fire, water, gravity and chemistry, they create a spectacular chain reaction, a self-destructing performance of physical interactions, chemical reactions, and precisely crafted chaos worthy of Rube Goldberg or Alfred Hitchcock.

  • "A chain reaction of objects that applies the principles of cause and effect, gravity, chemistry, water, gas propulsion and vector propagation to produce the chain reaction in a kinetic art installation by Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss."
  • "A dustbin bag slowly comes into motion. Result: an absurd and exciting chain reaction in which fire, water, gravity and chemistry decide the course of events. Fischli and Weiss create a universe of things by making them relate to each other in different ways and allowing to operate individually. At the same time, they question their own grasp of the subject. The Fischli and Weiss approach is a play between power and importance, between a systematic order and recognition of the autonomy of things themselves."

  • "Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss created an enormous Rube Goldberg-like mechanism/art installation out of cast-off household objects, ramps, old tires and chemicals. The contraption's function was to destroy itself in a lengthy and spectacular chain reaction; the video itself is the visual record of the art/machine's half-hour performance. This German physics-fest is powered by natural forces - steam, gravity, friction, sublimation, fire and illustrates the kind of hijinks one suspects go on in the basement of the Physics Building when overworked graduate students have had a few too many Twinkies. There is no narration, no soundtrack, no living, breathing creature of any sort - just household items spinning, spilling, and spewing all over the place, accompanied by a very German aesthetic."@en

  • "In a warehouse, a precarious structure 20-30 metres long was constructed from various items. When set in motion, a chain reaction ensues. Fire, water, gravity and chemistry determine the life-cycle of objects and things. So begins a story about cause and effect, mechanism and art, improbability and precision."
