The Meditations of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves'and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives'and destroyed them. Now, Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization, and helped make us who we are. Penguin's Great Ideas series features twelve groundbreaking works by some of history's most prodigious thinkers, and each volume is beautifully packaged with a unique type-drive design that highlights the bookmaker's art. Offering great literature in great packages at great prices, this series is ideal for those readers who want to explore and savor the Great Ideas that have shaped the world. Few ancient works have been as influential as the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, philosopher and emperor of Rome (A.D. 161'180). A series of spiritual exercises filled with wisdom, practical guidance, and profound understanding of human behavior, it remains one of the greatest works of spiritual and ethical reflection ever written. Marcus's insights and advice'on everything from living in the world to coping with adversity and interacting with others'have made the Meditations required reading for statesmen and philosophers alike, while generations of ordinary readers have responded to the straightforward intimacy of his style. For anyone who struggles to reconcile the demands of leadership with a concern for personal integrity and spiritual well-being, the Meditations remains as relevant now as it was two thousand years ago.

  • "These spiritual reflections of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180) show a leader trying to make sense of himself and the universe, and cover diverse topics such as the question of virtue, human rationality and the nature of the gods. In developing his personal beliefs, Aurelius created one of the greatest works of philosophy: a series of wise and practical aphorisms that have been consulted by statesmen, thinkers and everyday philosophers for almost two thousand years."
  • "One of the most significant books ever written by a head of State, the Meditations are a collection of philosophical thoughts by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius (121-180 ce). Covering issues such as duty, forgiveness, brotherhood, strength in adversity and the best way to approach life and death, the Meditations have inspired thinkers, poets and politicians since their first publication more than 500 years ago. Today, the book stands as one of the great guides and companions-a cornerstone of Western thought."
  • "Dive into a collection of thought-provoking essays from one of the most remarkable figures in history, Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. In Meditations, Marcus Aurelius lays out his personal philosophy of stoicism, which involves honing one's discipline and eschewing base or excessive sensual pleasures. A must-read for fans of ancient history and philosophy."@en
  • "Another translation of Aurelius' Meditations, this version includes other sections detailing more about the emperor's life and philosophies."
  • "This is another version of Emperor Marcus Aurelius' Meditations translated by Jeremy Collier. All 12 books are included for easy comparison with other translations in the Anthology. There are also introductory notes regarding the life of Aurelius."@en
  • "The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius is one of the best-known and most popular works of ancient philosophy, offering spiritual reflections on how best to understand the universe and one's place within it."
  • "This Roman Stoic hands down the day-to-day principles on which an all-powerful Emperor ruled for the welfare of the people."@en
  • "Written in Greek without any intention of publication, a book by the 2nd century Roman emperor offers spiritual reflections and exercises developed by the author, as a leader who struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe, covering such topics as the question of virtue, human rationality, the nature of the gods, and Aurelius's own emotions. This edition includes a selection of the correspondence between Marcus Aurelius and his former tutor, the rhetorician Marcus Cornelius Fronto."@en
  • "Wisdom from one of the greatest philosophical minds in all of Roman history Divided into twelve books, these meditations chronicle Aurelius's personal quest for self-improvement. This enduring text from one of history's greatest warriors and leaders has been compared to St. Augustine's Confessions for its timelessness, clarity, and candor. These writings, composed between 161 and 180 CE, set forth Aurelius's Stoic philosophy and stress the importance of acting in a way that is moral and just rather than self-indulgent. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readabi."@en
  • "Offers a modern translation of the Roman philosopher's journal."@en
  • "This book contains Marcus Aurelius's personal writings (addressed to himself) which he used as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement."
  • "Marcus Annius Verus was born in Rome, A. D. 121, and assumed the name of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, by which he is known to history, on his adoption by the Emperor T. Aurelius Antoninus. M. Aurelius was educated by the orator Fronto, but turned aside from rhetoric to the study of the Stoic philosophy, of which he was the last distinguished representative. The "Meditations," which he wrote in Greek, are among the most noteworthy expressions of this system, and exhibit it favorably on its practical side. The "Meditations" picture with faithfulness the mind and character of this noblest of the Emperors. Simple in style and sincere in tone, they record for all time the height reached by pagan aspiration in its effort to solve the problem of conduct; and the essential agreement of his practice with his teaching proved that "Even in a palace life may be led well.""@en
  • "This 18th-century edition of Aurelius' Meditations is an additional version for the casual academic or the serious scholar to examine in relation to other translations and formats. As with other versions, the introductory notes include a short biographical sketch of the Emperor."@en
  • "A new translation, the first in thirty-five years, of one of the most influential and admired books of the ages, the reflections of Marcus Aurelius, Stoic philosopher and emperor of Rome 161-180 A.D., few books have meant as much to as many as Marcus Aurelius's Meditations. It remains a life-enhancing work of the basics of Stoic doctrine, Aurelius's life and career, the recurring themes and structure of the work's ongoing influence."@en

April 121 n. Chr. in Rom geboren. 138 n. Chr. wurde er als Princeps eingesetzt. Das Denkmal als charismatischer römischer Kaiser und kluger Philosoph, das er sich noch zu Lebzeiten setzte, verdankt sich wesentlich der von ihm geleisteten Verknüpfung von politischer Philosophie und Herrschaftspraxis, die sich in seiner Leitvorstellung von der Gleichheit und Freiheit aller Menschen manifestiert. Marc Aurel starb 180 v. Chr. an den Folgen der Pest."
  • "Marcus Aurelius (121-180 CE), philosopher-emperor, wrote the Meditations (his title was "The matters addressed to himself") in periods of solitude during military campaigns. His ethical, religious, and existential reflections have endured as an expression of Stoicism, a text for students of that philosophy, and a guide to the moral life."@en

  • "Stirring reflections on the human condition from a warrior and emperor provide a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the 2nd century. Recognizing that suffering is at the core of life, he counsels stoic detachment in the face of inevitable pain, loss and death."
  • "In this translation from the scholarly Greek in which Marcus kept Aurelius has private journal, Maxwell Staniforth gives us a simple and straightforward version of a work which has often been compared with The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis."
  • "Translates an edited version of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius's ponderings on power, human nature, and mortality, among other philosophical concerns; includes a chronology, a genealogical table, and extensive notes."
  • "The Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (a.d. 121'180) embodied in his person that deeply cherished, ideal figure of antiquity, the philosopher-king. His Meditations are not only one of the most important expressions of the Stoic philosophy of his time but also an enduringly inspiring guide to living a good and just life. Written in moments snatched from military campaigns and the rigors of politics, these ethical and spiritual reflections reveal a mind of exceptional clarity and originality, and a spirit attuned to both the particulars of human destiny and the vast patterns that underlie it. From the Hardcover edition."@en
  • "Meditations a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor 161 180 CE, setting forth his ideas on Stoic philosophy. Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. Some of it was written while he was positioned at Aquincum on campaign in Pannonia, because internal notes tell us that the second book was written when he was campaigning against the Quadi on the river Granova (modern-day Hron) and the third book was written at Carnuntum. It is not clear that he ever intended the writings to be published, so the title Meditations is but one of several commonly assigned to the collection. These writings take the form of quotations varying in length from one sentence to long paragraphs."@en
