The German Revolution, 1917-1923

Broue (history, Institut d'etudes politiques, Grenoble) understands the proper socialist revolution to mirror that of the Bolsheviks. In the case of Germany, which experienced five years of struggle amongst leftist groups after the First World War, the revolution simply did not happen the way it should have, and the resulting backlash was catastrophic. Broue carefully describes how parties were created and came to some measure of power, how they struggled with their identities and purposes, as well as their relationships with each other, how they grew in influence amongst the workers, and how they were defeated almost without a murmur. He is especially careful to place Germany in the context of the events that so many believed were evidence of worldwide revolution. Broue closes with an evaluation of what other scholars have said about the rise and fall of the left and ultra-left in the Germany of the period, whether the revolution simply was not to be, or whether internal conflicts doomed it, and its.
