Maggie, a girl of the streets; a story of New York. A facsimile reproduction of the first edition of 1893
Maggie: A Girl of the Streets is an 1893 novel by American author Stephen Crane. Often called a novella because of its short length, it was Crane's first published fictional work. Because the work was considered too risqué by publishers, Crane, who was 21 years-old at the time, had to finance the publication of the novel himself. The novel takes place in the Bowery, a New York neighborhood in lower Manhattan. The story opens with Jimmie, at this point a young boy, trying to fight a gang of boys from an opposing neighborhood all by himself ...

"First published in 1893, when Stephen Crane was only twenty-one years old, Maggie is the harrowing tale of a young woman's fall into prostitution and destitution in New York City's notorious Bowery slum."
"Maggie is ""regarded as the first work of unalloyed naturalism in American fiction."" According to the naturalistic principles, a character is set into a world where there is no escape from one's biological heredity. Additionally, the circumstances in which a person finds oneself will dominate one's behavior, depriving the individual of responsibility. Although Stephen Crane denied any influence by Émile Zola, the creator of Naturalism, on his work, examples in his texts indicate that this American author was inspired by French naturalism."@en
"This story was one of Stephen Crane's earliest published works and was considered to "realistic" for many publishers. It follows the life of a girl raised in the muck of the Bowery slums, who succumbs to the degradation of her environment."@en

"Maggie, a Girl of the Streets is about a family living in the slums of turn-of-the-century New York. The protagonist of the book is a young girl named Maggie, who is full of dreams and aspirations, unlike her loser relatives. Her main dream is to meet a good man and fall in love with him and start a family, to live happily ever after. However, the fellow that she chooses to fall in love with is a loser who ends up leaving Maggie. Her family, not yet satisfied with all the harm that they caused Maggie during her childhood, disowns Maggie and drives her to her doom."@en

"From the Publisher: In 1892 Stephen Crane (1871-1900) published Maggie, Girl of the Streets at his own expense. Considered at the time to be immature, it was a failure. Since that time it has come to be considered one of the earliest American realistic novels. Maggie is the story of a pretty child of the Bowery which is written with the same intensity and vivid scenes of his masterpiece-The Red Badge of Courage. In her short life, Maggie "blossomed in a mud puddle", was driven to prostitution, and died by her own hand while still a teenager. Crane, who worked as a free lance reporter, was in many ways addicted to the low life of the cities. He died at the age of 29."@en
"Stephen Crane's gritty, realistic examination of poverty in the Bowery at the turn of the nineteenth century centres around Maggie, a naIve young woman whose fall from grace echoes the keen social and political issues of the day."@en
