Martindale had been built on Shoshoni sacred ground, which meant nothing to its inhabitants until the day a half-breed Shoshoni arrived in town. He demanded compensation for the land and for the murder of an old Shoshoni spokesman. From that day on, Marshal Arnold Boyle and the town faced unimaginable difficulties.
