[Letter] 1839 Oct. 11, Washington City DC, [to] Capt[ain] N T Jarrett, Franklin, Maion, N[orth] C[arolina]

This document is a letter from William Holland Thomas, dated October 11, 1839, to Captain N.T. Jarrett of North Carolina. Thomas told Jarrett he would succeed in procuring the deeds of the Cherokees remaining East as provided for under the Treaty of 1835 for per capita improvements, spoliations, and property sold which, Thomas estimated, would amount to 150,000 dollars. Thomas also mentioned the Cherokees claims for removal and subsistence had been rejected by the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, but it was currently under reconsideration. Thomas concluded his letter by telling Captain Jarrett that if the Commissioner rejected the proposal again, he would then appeal to the Secretary of War and that he would return home as soon as the proposal had been decided on.
