Emerging Asian American pan-ethnic congregations : the religious construction of symbolic racial identity

This study of forty-four congregations explores the emergence of Asian American pan-ethnic congregations in the San Francisco Bay Area. Half of these formerly ethnic churches now self-identify as "Asian American" and organize around racial boundaries instead of ethnic affiliation. A comparison of evangelical and mainline congregations demonstrates how religious discourses shape pan-ethnic boundaries and congregational cultures.
