"A black comedy of a coroner and his relationship with three generations of women all with the same name."
""Three women who have the same name methodically rid themselves of unwanted husbands in Peter Greenaway's visually dazzling mixture of metaphors and murder. When Cissie 1 (Joan Plowright) finds her husband with another woman, she impulsively drowns him in a bathtub. Her daughter, Cissie 2 (Juliet Stevenson), later drowns her husband at sea, and Cissie 3 (Joely Richardson) ultimately dispatches hers in a community swimming pool. The local coroner, Madgett (Bernard Hill), who's an obsessive game player, agrees to declare the deaths accidental drownings in return for sexual favors. But when things don't go exactly as planned, madgett devises a final game that could be the undoing of them all"--Videodisc sleeve."
"Three women, each named Cissie Colpitts, drown their husbands. The families and friends of the three murdered men suspect the three women of the killings and meet under a water tower. When none of the three Colpitts women submit to the local coroner Madgett's sexual advances he decides to admit his part in the murders. But his gameplaying instincts take the better of him, and he organizes a game of tug-of-war between the conspirators and the women. In the end Madgett's son Smut kills himself and the three Cissie Colpitts leaves Madgett to drown in a sinking boat. Throughout the film the numbers 1-100 turn up in unexpected places: on cows in a field, on tags attached to herrings, painted on the backs of bees, on a tree, on the rumps of cows, etc."@en

"Grossmutter, Tochter und Nichte ertränken der Reihe nach ihre Ehemänner. Sie vollbringen die Untaten in Form ritualisierter "Spiele", bei denen Zahlen eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Zum Glück kennen die Damen einen Leichenbeschauer, der gegen gewisse Gefälligkeiten einen unverdächtigen Totenschein ausstellt. Deshalb schwebt schliesslich auch er in akuter Lebensgefahr."
