Spindle top

Spindletop well was drilled in the late 1900s, people believed only the Eastern Coast of the United States was rich in oil. Oil drilling had been pioneered by Edwin Drake in 1859 in Pennsylvania. On January 10, 1901 a great geyser of oil spewed into the air from the well on Spindletop Hill in Beaumont, Texas. It was then that people realized oil could be found at great depths and in enormous amounts in areas other than the east coast. Men risked their very lives delving into the earth to reach the "black gold" that was oil.
