Spannende Handlung, eine zupackende Sprache und das verblüffende Ineinander von Komik und Tragik machen ihn zum Dauerbrenner. Leonhard Frank wurde am 4. September 1882 in Würzburg geboren. Sein Vater war Schreiner, er selbst ging zu einem Schlosser in die Lehre, arbeitete als Chauffeur, Anstreicher, Klinikdiener. Talentiert, aber mittellos, begann er 1904 ein Kunststudium in München. 1910 zog er nach Berlin, entdeckte seine erzählerische Begabung und verfasste seinen ersten Roman, 'Die Räuberbande', für den er den Fontane-Preis erhielt. Im Kriegsjahr 1915 musste er in die Schweiz fliehen: Er hatte Zivilcourage gezeigt und handgreiflich seine pazifistische Gesinnung kundgetan. Hier schrieb er Erzählungen gegen den Krieg, die 1918 unter dem berühmt gewordenen Titel 'Der Mensch ist gut' erschienen. Von 1918 bis 1933 lebte er wieder in Berlin, nun schon als bekannter Autor. 1933 musste er Deutschland erneut verlassen, diesmal für siebzehn Jahre. Die Stationen seines Exils waren die Schweiz, England, Frankreich, Portugal und zuletzt Hollywood und New York. 1952, zwei Jahre nach seiner Rückkehr aus den USA, veröffentlichte er den autobiographischen Roman 'Links wo das Herz ist'. Leonhard Frank, 'ein Gentleman, elastisch, mit weissen Haaren, der in seinem langen Leben alles gehabt hat: Hunger, Entbehrung, Erfolg, Geld, Luxus, Frauen, Autos und immer wieder Arbeit' (Fritz Kortner), starb am 18. August 1961 in München."
