"Continuing to explore the theme of societal decay that he addressed in earlier films such as, The Leopard and Rocco And His Brothers, director Visconti's, The Damned, describes the collapse of a wealthy German industrialist family during the period leading up to World War II. Capitalizing on the build up of the armed forces in Germany, the Essenbeck family has started to do business with the Nazi Party. As Germany spirals towards facism, members of the Essenbeck family are divided in their political sympathies. When patriarch, Baron Joachim von Essenbeck, is murdered, Herbert Thalmann, the firm's vice president and a fervent anti-Nazi, is accused of the crime. Visconti portrays the Night of the Long Knives, during which Hitler decimated his political opponents, as an extended orgy. SS officers and their minions drink champagne, while their less ideologically committed colleagues are massacred."@en
