An inheritor of neo-realism, Antonioni here and elsewhere frees the image from the functional demands of narration. He dissolves the narrative without entirely dispensing with narrativity. A science fiction story (the director's film) displaces the story of the actress Ida which in turn displaces the story of upper class Mavi. The director's image of the woman he seeks both conforms to and dissolves into the image of Louise Brooks. There is a resemblance to detective fiction, but the interest lies in the mystery and profound uncertainty threatening the story, not the explanation. As in other films such as Blow Up, Zabriskie Point and The Passenger, the fiction replaces the subjectivity of the characters, thus becoming the object of itself or, as Rhodie puts it, 'a documentary of a fiction'"
