"Documentary on the "looking glass world" of ballet, emphasizing the unglamourous side of life behind the scenes. Using the National Ballet of Canada as an example, the program examines various aspects of the dancer's life: company class and rehearsals ; the crucial support of pointe shoes ; the expense of ballet productions ; the physical strength and stamina required of the male dancer ; the rigors of touring ; the coordination of effort by performers and technical staff in preparing for a performance. In brief interviews, the dancers themselves share their experiences and observations. Among the ballets seen in performance are The sleeping beauty (Act III, coda of the Bluebird pas de deux ; finale) and The nutcracker (party and snow scenes). Rehearsal footage includes excerpts from the Rose adagio from The sleeping beauty, with Lois Smith as Aurora ; and the third movement of George Balanchine's Concerto barocco. Students of the National Ballet School are seen in ballet and academic classes, and at a weigh-in conducted by Betty Oliphant."
