  • "The historic site at the west end of Grosse Ile in Canada was a scene of a mass tragedy in 1847. Here lies the burial trenches where thousands of Irish emigrants were dumped, one on top of the other, to suffer one final indignity in death. Having already been subjected to severe famine, disease, and persecution at home in Ireland, the Irish poor left in a mass emigration movement in search of a new start in Canada. Experiencing appalling conditions on inferior overloaded ships, many succumbed to fever, disease, and finally death on the transatlantic voyage to Canada. Those who survived the voyage had to pass inspection and quarantine on the island of Grosse Ile in the St. Lawrence Seaway, the healthy could then go on to Quebec. However, by now, the conditions on board had taken their toll, and below most decks was like a 'pestilential dungeon', with many passengers sick with fever and dying daily, only to be thrown overboard into the St. Lawrence while waiting for the inspection. Upon inspection, those who showed signs of infection were herded to go to the quarantine hospital on Grosse Ile. The quarantine hospital was in a disgraceful condition, run-down, and inadequate to administer to the boatloads of sick, who needed food and medical care. In the end, thousands died, with no help to alleviate the situation from an unsympathetic Canadian government. This book is based on the true story of one emigrant's personal experience through all of it."
