""It is the summer of 1936, in the early months of an agonizing civil war that promises to engulf Spain and shake the world. In a prison in the pilgrim city of Santiago de Compostela, an artist sketches the famous Portico da Gloria using a carpenter's pencil. But instead of reproducing the sculptured faces of the prophets and elders, he draws the faces of his fellow Republican prisoners. Many years later in post-Franco Spain, a survivor of that period, Doctor Daniel da Barca, returns from exile to his native Galicia, and the threads of the past begin to be woven together."--Http://www.powells.com."

"During the Spanish Civil War, two lovers struggle to build a life togeather."
"This film is set in Galicia, northern Spain, just before the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936. Republican doctor Daniel Da Barca is in love with Marisa Mallo. When he is arrested for his left-wing ideas by Herbal, a civil guard who is secretly in love with Marisa, Da Barca is sent to prison and Herbal becomes his prison guard. After the Nationalist military coup, the Mexican government asks for all political prisoners who are Mexican nationals to be returned to Mexico. This gives Da Barca, who was born in Mexico, some hope. Nevertheless, his hopes are dashed when, after marrying Marisa, he is caught in possession of a concealed radio by prison officials and is sent to the prison on the island of San Simón, which is known as a cemetery for the living."
