  • ""On 17 September 1862, the Convention of the People of South Carolina...asked the governor to collect and record in a suitable book, the names of South Carolina soldiers who had fallen in the defense of the state. An early attempt to compile the names was found to be inaccurate, and in 1864 the legistlature appointed Professor William J. Rivers of South Carolina College to take over the task.... "The establishment of radical reconstruction government ended state funding for Rivers's work, but he continued to collect names before turning his work over to the state Survivors Association in 1870....
