"The young Paolino and Carolina keep their recent marriage secret, fearing the anger of Carolina's father Geronimo. Hoping to calm Geronimo, Paolino persuades his friend Robinson, an English count who is penniless and looking for a good dowry, to ask for the hand of Carolina's elder sister Elisetta. Elisetta hears that she has a noble suitor and starts to give herself the airs of a countess. Caught up by the matrimonial atmosphere the widowed aunt of the two girls, Fidalma confides her projects for marriage to Elisetta. Things become complicated when Robinson arrives to pay his suit and is immediately taken with Carolina. Paolino now has not only lost an ally, but also finds a situation that stirs him to jealousy, even though Carofina wants to have nothing to do with the count. Elisetta, whose vanity has been offended, is convinced that her sister is engaged in dark dealings and criticises her. Fidalma attempts in vain to restore calm. Geronimo is flabbergasted by the family quarrels into which his daughters are drawing him but which he can scarcely understand because of his deafness."
